Virat Kohli’s century star of India’s fourth successful chase of the World Cup

Clinical display by India to defeat Bangladesh by 7 wickets

October 19, 2023: A World Cup hundred in a chase had eluded Virat Kohli, and he made sure that he wouldn’t miss it this time around, sprinting to it with a flurry of boundaries and some graceful help from KL Rahul.

Chasing a below-par target of 257 for a win, India began with aggression as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put the Bangla bowling to the sword with a series of fours and sixes and in no time, the contest turned one-sided. Rohit missed his fifty, but Gill completed his, which could’ve been a hundred but for momentary lack of concentration, holing to deep mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer missed out another chance to prove his credentials, falling for 19.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul put up an unbeaten 83-run partnership with Kohli entertaining the crowd with some power-hitting sixes at the end of his innings. Summing up his hunger for runs on the big stage, Kohli in the post-match presentation said: “I wanted to make a big contribution. I have had a few fifties in World Cups, but haven’t really converted. I just wanted to finish off the game this time around and hang around till the end, which is what I have done over the years.”

Earlier, deciding to bat first, Bangladesh squandered a good start after putting up 90 for no loss in 14 overs, but couldn’t get to a challenging score. Credit to India’s bowlers, who came back with renewed vigour after the fall of the first wicket. Despite all-rounder Hardik Pandya limping out with a twisted ankle, India’s bowling dominance continued with Bumrah, Siraj, Jadeja and Kuldeep chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. Indian fielding was top-notch with Jadeja and KLR Rahul picking brilliant catches.

KL Rahul's acrobatic catch
Tanzid Hasan, getting his maiden fifty scoring 51 off 43 balls and Litton Das, who made 82-ball 66 were the stand-out performances at the top. After a lull in the middle-order, veteran wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim’s 38 and Mahmudullah’s big-hitting 46 off 36 balls got Bangladesh to a decent 256 but, in the end proved small for the rampaging Indians.

If anything, the crowd missed in the match was a wicket for Virat Kohli, who bowled just three balls to complete the over by Pandya.

Tied on points with four wins each, the table-toppers New Zealand and India face off on Sunday at Dharamshala for a clear lead at the top.

World Cup's Blockbuster Friday loading...

Australia vs Pakistan at Bengaluru - Match 18 Preview

October 19, 2023: Javed Miandad vs Dennis Lillee, Wahab Riaz vs Shane Watson, Mike Hussey vs Saeed Ajmal - Top memories which come to the mind when anyone thinks about Australia vs Pakistan. What's in store for us on a blockbuster Friday when these two teams lock horns again in the World Cup 2023? Australia, with a slow start to the World Cup, cannot allow one more slip-up, while Pakistan will be raging to get their WC campaign back on track after a devastating loss against arch-rivals India!

Australia is coming into this game with a near-perfect victory against Srilanka, despite one point in time when their much-hyped pace attack looked toothless against the SL openers. Zampa getting back to form is a definite boost, although the small Chinnaswamy ground might test his skills, however, his franchise (RCB) experience should prove him good. Smith might not have had a great start to the World Cup, but, his calibre, combined with Warner's attacking instinct, Labuschagne's flamboyance, and fearless Maxwell and Stoinis at the death, might be too hot to handle for the Pakistan bowling attack. Australia may not rush Head back straight into the XI, but with Marsh's inconsistent form, they may spring a surprise.

15,16,41 have been the opening partnerships for Pakistan, which definitely will be a concern, despite the team opening their campaign against slightly weaker opponents, Netherlands and Srilanka. They have had a week to retrospect their loss against India and expect them to come back with a much-improved batting performance, especially from their captain, who looked in great touch against India. Shadab Khan has been a pale shadow of himself, and the cricketing greats back home want Shadab to be replaced with Usama Mir, but such is the class of Shadab, that he may be given a longer rope.

Pitch and Conditions: Bengaluru traditionally has been a high-scoring ground, wherein teams prefer to chase any kind of totals and doubt if this template will be broken. Smaller boundaries, terrific batters on both sides, expect a run fest!

Key Battles:

Zampa vs Pakistan middle order
Maxwell's pyrotechnics vs Pak spin

Can Bangladesh stop the Indian juggernaut?

India vs Bangladesh at MCA Stadium Pune - Match 17 Preview

October 19, 2023: India will be looking at extending their unbeaten run in this edition. Will Bangladesh put a spanner in the wheel is to be seen at the MCA Stadium when they face India in India for the first time since 1998.

Both teams have transformed themselves and prepared well for this mega event, but India, barring 2007, has defeated Bangladesh with ease in the remaining editions.

Bangladesh is the first nation to get the  Giant Slayer tag at World Cups, however, since then they have not progressed further. They are heavily reliant on Shakib and Mushfiqur to deliver the goods. Nazmul Shanto and Liton Das have troubled Indians in the past and it is to be seen how they will negotiate the Bumrah 2.0 and emerging Siraj bowling. Towhid and Mahmudullah playing at a lower position than their capability is hitting Bangladesh hard. Sending them up the order can provide the needed strike rotation during the 2nd Powerplay.

Bangladesh's bowling department looks weak with odd brilliant delivery, but Shakib with his left-arm bowling, has been holding the fort. Mustafizur has been out of fizz for some time and the supporting cast in Taskin, Mahady, and Nasum have also disappointed on the big stage.

India, on the other hand, is coming to this game with two precious wins over Australia and Pakistan, apart from the win over Afghanistan. They would like to tick box one more test-playing nation to keep their clean sheet intact.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been among the runs with a renewed approach to aggressive scoring. If Shubman Gill can make a big score, India can confidently work with a 6+5 combination.

At this stage of the tournament, a win is priceless for both teams, but India looks a better prepared side for this encounter. The availability of Shakib, although it is confirmed, will be critical to any hope of springing an upset by Bangladesh.

The Venue has a history of high-scoring games, and India would love to make use of the conditions and ensure that they are in a commanding position, both with points and run rate. All three games India has played, have been won chasing, and it would be a good idea to bat first. It is a test to understand our bowling strength under the lights. While last week, teams batting first had trouble defending the target (read SL against Pakistan), this week, teams chasing are finding it hard to win. India should test their strength in defending a target, and this is the best opportunity.

For Bangladesh, Liton Das has a career-best of 176 and Bangladesh has successfully chased 322 although it was against a lowly ranked Scotland. Do they have the capability to chase a score beyond 300 is to be seen.

Pure Cricket Advise: Bat first, score as much as possible.

Clinical display by New Zealand to top the table with four in four

Afghanistan flatter to deceive with lacklustre performance in the field

Mitchell Santner’s catch of the tournament

October 18, 2023: Catches win matches is an adage that’s been one of cricket’s oldest phrases. Afghanistan learnt the hard way against the professional Kiwi side. After the World champion beating performance, the expectations from the Hashmatullah led side was pretty high. They didn’t disappoint in the first quarter of the match, having the NZ side reeling at 110 for 4. This is where they let slip the match, primarily thanks to some poor catching letting the duo of skipper Tom Latham and Player of the match Glenn Phillips to capitalise on the largesse.

Winning the toss and electing to field at Chennai seemed the wise choice, considering the previous two encounters of the World Cup were won by the team chasing. Afghanistan, however, had to chase a mountain, the target of 289 was quite stiff in the face of some extremely disciplined Kiwi bowling.

The openers started briskly but both perished in quick succession to the near perfect bowling of Matt Henry and Trent Boult. Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi departed soon to blinder of a catch by Santner, who plucked the ball out of thin air. Rahmat Shah and Azmathullah Omarzai tried to revive the innings, putting up a half century partnership, but the Afghans surrendered meekly soon for 139. Santner and Lockie Fergusson were the pick of the bowlers picking three wickets a piece.

Earlier, put into bat, New Zealand started well, despite the early exit of in-form Devon Conway. Rachin Ravindra (32) and Will Young (54) took the team to 109 in 20 overs. However, a mini collapse ensued with both falling, along with Daryll Mitchell, for the addition of just 1 run. Afghanistan could’ve tightened the screws if only they grabbed the chances that came their way.
Hasmath dropped two sitters, as the team let go five catches enabling a 143-run partnership between Latham and Phillips. Both scored half centuries and some late flurry of hitting by Mark Chapman ensured NZ was well placed at the end of the first half.

If Afghanistan have to prove that their win against England was no flash in the pan performance, they need to improve a lot on their fielding. Now table-toppers, New Zealand, next meet India on Sunday and they have to sort out their fifth bowler option. Too much of persistence with Ravindra and Phillips to complete the quota could prove costly against the hosts.

South Africa falls flat in the face of Dutch resilience

Netherlands record the second major upset of World Cup 2023

October 17, 2023: An encounter that was a walk in the park for the Proteas turned out to be a tumbling fall on the face flat. A non–test playing nation which clawed back to qualify for this mega event, the Netherlands stitched a spirited fight back to hand South Africa another “feather” in the cap, adding to their existing tag of chokers.

Was this a game for the Netherlands to win? No, this was a game lost by South Africa. The South African think tank would have been in a hill station admiring the beauty when they were batting. A couple of unplayable deliveries apart, South Africa looked like giving away wickets. Eventually we are catered to an upset on the second consecutive day, after Afghanistan stunned defending champions England.

Half of the contingent played a major-part for their franchises in IPL, and yet today, they played schoolboy cricket. Both innings travelled through the same phases, losing four wickets under 100 and losing another two under 120, but what separated them was a player who showed resilience and players around stitching those important 20s.

South Africa, apart from David Miller and Heinrich Klassen, lacked intent to fight. At the fall of Miller, the asking rate was around 7. What they needed was a stable head to steer the chase, and what came out was uninspiring captaincy, a desperate attempt to boss the chase and finally, technical ineptness. In the end, the 38 runs separated the teams looked much smaller in front of the approach and lack of cricketing common sense in the South African Camp.

Earlier in the day, the Netherlands looked like an associate nation finding its feet losing wickets at regular intervals with one bright spot. Stephen Edwards, the skipper, stuck around with others, who failed to convert starts but converted those little partnerships to make a formidable 245 in 43 overs. Edwards’ 69 ball 78 with 10 fours and a six was worth its weight in gold. The victory margin was 38 runs, and South Africa conceded 32 runs in extras against just 8 by Netherlands. A difference worth pondering.

Right from the start of their chase, South Africa looked in a hurry to finish this off but when their international discard, Roelof Van Der Merwe, came on to bowl all hell fell loose. South African batters looked like they had applied glue to their spikes. Reading a spinner of the pitch and staying back with feet planted in the crease are cardinal sins in this part of the world. The problems only compounded when they tried to take on the bowlers and, in the process, lost wickets.

Every team has a core around which other performances are stitched, the South African team did not look like having one today. Was this a day off, or was it a going to be the case from here on to be seen. All in all, a team of international discards and migrants gave South Africa a befitting lesson in playing a game with heart and head in the right place.

Zampa, Marsh and Inglis star in Australia's first win

Match 14: Sri Lanka vs Australia, Ekana Stadium, Lucknow - Review

October 16, 2023In a long tournament played in round-robin format, two early losses may not be cause for concern, but if they are demoralizing defeats, then they could spell doom for the prospects of qualifying to the knock-out stage.

Australia found themselves in such a predicament facing Sri Lanka in their third encounter – an unfamiliar do-or-die kind of situation for the five-time World champions.

Winning the toss and electing to bat Sri Lanka were cruising at almost 6 an over with the openers adding 125 for the first wicket. Things did not seem good for Australia, until then. It was David Warner’s brilliant catch in the deep that gave skipper Cummins the first wicket of Pathum Nissanka, that turned things around. The fall of the Kusal Perera to Cummins meant both the half-centurions gone and the slide began soon.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa had Warner repeating the earlier catch in the deep to account for stand-in skipper Kusal Mendis and added three more wickets to return with figures of 4/47. Australia bundled out Sri Lanka for 209.

Chasing a moderate target of 210, Australia got off to a bad start, losing gritty Warner and Steve Smith early to pacer Madhushanka, reeling at 24/2.  It was left to Mitchell Marsh (52), Marnus Labuschagne (40) and Josh Inglis (58) to help Australia avoid any more difficulties. All-rounders Glen Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis chased down the remainder of the target in quick time win by five wickets, with 14 overs to spare.

Australia will next face Pakistan in an all-important encounter on October 20th in Bengaluru.

India maintain their World Cup record with Pakistan!

Bowlers and Rohit Sharma star in thrashing arch rivals for the 8th time

October 14, 2023: After the FIFA World Cup, this encounter is supposed to be the most viewed sporting spectacle on Television. It is one encounter where the fans want a tug-of-war fight between both teams. Did the encounter on 14th October live up to expectations? The answer is a vehement no.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are known to be explosive, but Shaheen Afridi and his in-swingers at the start of the innings will always be at the back of their mind. After all, they have been prey to such good-lengths in the past. Today, however, was different. The first run scored off a nice tuck to the square leg for a boundary, and what followed, was a marvelling stroke play by Rohit Sharma. Indian fans are always angry with Rohit Sharma and troll him as a No-Hit, Minnow basher and so on. I could decipher the root cause of this frustration – We want the artist to play longer, play those languid drives, nonchalant pulls, those reckless sweep shots and the furious Square Cuts. We enjoy them and feel it is our right not to be deprived.

Rohit Sharma, these days, is somehow serving them on a life-size platter. The frustration of him not making the remaining 14 runs to count for yet another century was much higher than the 86 he made to floor the opposition bowling. Gill and Kohli looked good for as long as they were playing, but it is natural to get carried away when the guy on the other side is timing the ball to perfection. Shaheen Afridi got his consolation when Rohit miscued a slower delivery to get dismissed 36 runs short of a victory for India. India scored these 36 runs in 8 odd overs, at a touch less than five runs an over. Shreyas Iyer scored a well-deserved half-century with some clean hitting, but all this looked lacklustre in the light of a Rohit Sharma show.

Earlier in the day, at one of the world’s largest venues filled with blue jerseys, Pakistan looked like a team in balance at one stage with 150+ runs for three wickets. The expectation of a high-scoring encounter peaked at that stage, with Indian fans also wanting a Babar Azam and Rizwan doing well to pose a daunting target for India. What happened next, was aptly described by Nasser Hussain, "A collapse that only Pakistan can conjure upon themselves". Losing the remaining seven wickets for 36 runs left cricket fans speechless.

Rizwan and Babar were playing a knock that was building itself into a strong partnership, which eventually might lead to a mammoth target. In typical calculation, the final score is double 30-over mark score, unless the lower middle order and tail are playing. 156 for 3 with Rizwan still playing well, it was a 300+ confirmed score, and if they go berserk, it was a near target of 350.

Siraj and Bumrah came back to attack and started weaving a web of outstanding fast bowling supported well by Kuldeep and Hardik. What followed was a catastrophe with clinical precision. The Green Brigade looked like Art majors trying to understand Integral Calculus. The ball was nipping back, reversing and importantly, hitting the top of the off stump. In anticipation of a respectable score, the tail wagged aimlessly, only for the innings to fold at 191.

So it has become a record of epic proportions for India to safeguard and Pakistan to break. If Pakistan wants to nurture any hope of making it to the semi-final, they have to be consistent in Bowling, Batting, Fielding, Team Selection and other departments that affect their performance on the field

rather than be worried about the Visas to Pakistani journalists and fans, or not playing Dil Dil Pakistan in the ground.

India, on the other hand, just have to continue the good work, and strictly bring back Ashwin in place of Shardul, irrespective of the pitch conditions.
