Virat Kohli’s century star of India’s fourth successful chase of the World Cup

Clinical display by India to defeat Bangladesh by 7 wickets

October 19, 2023: A World Cup hundred in a chase had eluded Virat Kohli, and he made sure that he wouldn’t miss it this time around, sprinting to it with a flurry of boundaries and some graceful help from KL Rahul.

Chasing a below-par target of 257 for a win, India began with aggression as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put the Bangla bowling to the sword with a series of fours and sixes and in no time, the contest turned one-sided. Rohit missed his fifty, but Gill completed his, which could’ve been a hundred but for momentary lack of concentration, holing to deep mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer missed out another chance to prove his credentials, falling for 19.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul put up an unbeaten 83-run partnership with Kohli entertaining the crowd with some power-hitting sixes at the end of his innings. Summing up his hunger for runs on the big stage, Kohli in the post-match presentation said: “I wanted to make a big contribution. I have had a few fifties in World Cups, but haven’t really converted. I just wanted to finish off the game this time around and hang around till the end, which is what I have done over the years.”

Earlier, deciding to bat first, Bangladesh squandered a good start after putting up 90 for no loss in 14 overs, but couldn’t get to a challenging score. Credit to India’s bowlers, who came back with renewed vigour after the fall of the first wicket. Despite all-rounder Hardik Pandya limping out with a twisted ankle, India’s bowling dominance continued with Bumrah, Siraj, Jadeja and Kuldeep chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. Indian fielding was top-notch with Jadeja and KLR Rahul picking brilliant catches.

KL Rahul's acrobatic catch
Tanzid Hasan, getting his maiden fifty scoring 51 off 43 balls and Litton Das, who made 82-ball 66 were the stand-out performances at the top. After a lull in the middle-order, veteran wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim’s 38 and Mahmudullah’s big-hitting 46 off 36 balls got Bangladesh to a decent 256 but, in the end proved small for the rampaging Indians.

If anything, the crowd missed in the match was a wicket for Virat Kohli, who bowled just three balls to complete the over by Pandya.

Tied on points with four wins each, the table-toppers New Zealand and India face off on Sunday at Dharamshala for a clear lead at the top.

World Cup's Blockbuster Friday loading...

Australia vs Pakistan at Bengaluru - Match 18 Preview

October 19, 2023: Javed Miandad vs Dennis Lillee, Wahab Riaz vs Shane Watson, Mike Hussey vs Saeed Ajmal - Top memories which come to the mind when anyone thinks about Australia vs Pakistan. What's in store for us on a blockbuster Friday when these two teams lock horns again in the World Cup 2023? Australia, with a slow start to the World Cup, cannot allow one more slip-up, while Pakistan will be raging to get their WC campaign back on track after a devastating loss against arch-rivals India!

Australia is coming into this game with a near-perfect victory against Srilanka, despite one point in time when their much-hyped pace attack looked toothless against the SL openers. Zampa getting back to form is a definite boost, although the small Chinnaswamy ground might test his skills, however, his franchise (RCB) experience should prove him good. Smith might not have had a great start to the World Cup, but, his calibre, combined with Warner's attacking instinct, Labuschagne's flamboyance, and fearless Maxwell and Stoinis at the death, might be too hot to handle for the Pakistan bowling attack. Australia may not rush Head back straight into the XI, but with Marsh's inconsistent form, they may spring a surprise.

15,16,41 have been the opening partnerships for Pakistan, which definitely will be a concern, despite the team opening their campaign against slightly weaker opponents, Netherlands and Srilanka. They have had a week to retrospect their loss against India and expect them to come back with a much-improved batting performance, especially from their captain, who looked in great touch against India. Shadab Khan has been a pale shadow of himself, and the cricketing greats back home want Shadab to be replaced with Usama Mir, but such is the class of Shadab, that he may be given a longer rope.

Pitch and Conditions: Bengaluru traditionally has been a high-scoring ground, wherein teams prefer to chase any kind of totals and doubt if this template will be broken. Smaller boundaries, terrific batters on both sides, expect a run fest!

Key Battles:

Zampa vs Pakistan middle order
Maxwell's pyrotechnics vs Pak spin

Can Bangladesh stop the Indian juggernaut?

India vs Bangladesh at MCA Stadium Pune - Match 17 Preview

October 19, 2023: India will be looking at extending their unbeaten run in this edition. Will Bangladesh put a spanner in the wheel is to be seen at the MCA Stadium when they face India in India for the first time since 1998.

Both teams have transformed themselves and prepared well for this mega event, but India, barring 2007, has defeated Bangladesh with ease in the remaining editions.

Bangladesh is the first nation to get the  Giant Slayer tag at World Cups, however, since then they have not progressed further. They are heavily reliant on Shakib and Mushfiqur to deliver the goods. Nazmul Shanto and Liton Das have troubled Indians in the past and it is to be seen how they will negotiate the Bumrah 2.0 and emerging Siraj bowling. Towhid and Mahmudullah playing at a lower position than their capability is hitting Bangladesh hard. Sending them up the order can provide the needed strike rotation during the 2nd Powerplay.

Bangladesh's bowling department looks weak with odd brilliant delivery, but Shakib with his left-arm bowling, has been holding the fort. Mustafizur has been out of fizz for some time and the supporting cast in Taskin, Mahady, and Nasum have also disappointed on the big stage.

India, on the other hand, is coming to this game with two precious wins over Australia and Pakistan, apart from the win over Afghanistan. They would like to tick box one more test-playing nation to keep their clean sheet intact.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been among the runs with a renewed approach to aggressive scoring. If Shubman Gill can make a big score, India can confidently work with a 6+5 combination.

At this stage of the tournament, a win is priceless for both teams, but India looks a better prepared side for this encounter. The availability of Shakib, although it is confirmed, will be critical to any hope of springing an upset by Bangladesh.

The Venue has a history of high-scoring games, and India would love to make use of the conditions and ensure that they are in a commanding position, both with points and run rate. All three games India has played, have been won chasing, and it would be a good idea to bat first. It is a test to understand our bowling strength under the lights. While last week, teams batting first had trouble defending the target (read SL against Pakistan), this week, teams chasing are finding it hard to win. India should test their strength in defending a target, and this is the best opportunity.

For Bangladesh, Liton Das has a career-best of 176 and Bangladesh has successfully chased 322 although it was against a lowly ranked Scotland. Do they have the capability to chase a score beyond 300 is to be seen.

Pure Cricket Advise: Bat first, score as much as possible.

Clinical display by New Zealand to top the table with four in four

Afghanistan flatter to deceive with lacklustre performance in the field

Mitchell Santner’s catch of the tournament

October 18, 2023: Catches win matches is an adage that’s been one of cricket’s oldest phrases. Afghanistan learnt the hard way against the professional Kiwi side. After the World champion beating performance, the expectations from the Hashmatullah led side was pretty high. They didn’t disappoint in the first quarter of the match, having the NZ side reeling at 110 for 4. This is where they let slip the match, primarily thanks to some poor catching letting the duo of skipper Tom Latham and Player of the match Glenn Phillips to capitalise on the largesse.

Winning the toss and electing to field at Chennai seemed the wise choice, considering the previous two encounters of the World Cup were won by the team chasing. Afghanistan, however, had to chase a mountain, the target of 289 was quite stiff in the face of some extremely disciplined Kiwi bowling.

The openers started briskly but both perished in quick succession to the near perfect bowling of Matt Henry and Trent Boult. Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi departed soon to blinder of a catch by Santner, who plucked the ball out of thin air. Rahmat Shah and Azmathullah Omarzai tried to revive the innings, putting up a half century partnership, but the Afghans surrendered meekly soon for 139. Santner and Lockie Fergusson were the pick of the bowlers picking three wickets a piece.

Earlier, put into bat, New Zealand started well, despite the early exit of in-form Devon Conway. Rachin Ravindra (32) and Will Young (54) took the team to 109 in 20 overs. However, a mini collapse ensued with both falling, along with Daryll Mitchell, for the addition of just 1 run. Afghanistan could’ve tightened the screws if only they grabbed the chances that came their way.
Hasmath dropped two sitters, as the team let go five catches enabling a 143-run partnership between Latham and Phillips. Both scored half centuries and some late flurry of hitting by Mark Chapman ensured NZ was well placed at the end of the first half.

If Afghanistan have to prove that their win against England was no flash in the pan performance, they need to improve a lot on their fielding. Now table-toppers, New Zealand, next meet India on Sunday and they have to sort out their fifth bowler option. Too much of persistence with Ravindra and Phillips to complete the quota could prove costly against the hosts.

South Africa falls flat in the face of Dutch resilience

Netherlands record the second major upset of World Cup 2023

October 17, 2023: An encounter that was a walk in the park for the Proteas turned out to be a tumbling fall on the face flat. A non–test playing nation which clawed back to qualify for this mega event, the Netherlands stitched a spirited fight back to hand South Africa another “feather” in the cap, adding to their existing tag of chokers.

Was this a game for the Netherlands to win? No, this was a game lost by South Africa. The South African think tank would have been in a hill station admiring the beauty when they were batting. A couple of unplayable deliveries apart, South Africa looked like giving away wickets. Eventually we are catered to an upset on the second consecutive day, after Afghanistan stunned defending champions England.

Half of the contingent played a major-part for their franchises in IPL, and yet today, they played schoolboy cricket. Both innings travelled through the same phases, losing four wickets under 100 and losing another two under 120, but what separated them was a player who showed resilience and players around stitching those important 20s.

South Africa, apart from David Miller and Heinrich Klassen, lacked intent to fight. At the fall of Miller, the asking rate was around 7. What they needed was a stable head to steer the chase, and what came out was uninspiring captaincy, a desperate attempt to boss the chase and finally, technical ineptness. In the end, the 38 runs separated the teams looked much smaller in front of the approach and lack of cricketing common sense in the South African Camp.

Earlier in the day, the Netherlands looked like an associate nation finding its feet losing wickets at regular intervals with one bright spot. Stephen Edwards, the skipper, stuck around with others, who failed to convert starts but converted those little partnerships to make a formidable 245 in 43 overs. Edwards’ 69 ball 78 with 10 fours and a six was worth its weight in gold. The victory margin was 38 runs, and South Africa conceded 32 runs in extras against just 8 by Netherlands. A difference worth pondering.

Right from the start of their chase, South Africa looked in a hurry to finish this off but when their international discard, Roelof Van Der Merwe, came on to bowl all hell fell loose. South African batters looked like they had applied glue to their spikes. Reading a spinner of the pitch and staying back with feet planted in the crease are cardinal sins in this part of the world. The problems only compounded when they tried to take on the bowlers and, in the process, lost wickets.

Every team has a core around which other performances are stitched, the South African team did not look like having one today. Was this a day off, or was it a going to be the case from here on to be seen. All in all, a team of international discards and migrants gave South Africa a befitting lesson in playing a game with heart and head in the right place.

Zampa, Marsh and Inglis star in Australia's first win

Match 14: Sri Lanka vs Australia, Ekana Stadium, Lucknow - Review

October 16, 2023In a long tournament played in round-robin format, two early losses may not be cause for concern, but if they are demoralizing defeats, then they could spell doom for the prospects of qualifying to the knock-out stage.

Australia found themselves in such a predicament facing Sri Lanka in their third encounter – an unfamiliar do-or-die kind of situation for the five-time World champions.

Winning the toss and electing to bat Sri Lanka were cruising at almost 6 an over with the openers adding 125 for the first wicket. Things did not seem good for Australia, until then. It was David Warner’s brilliant catch in the deep that gave skipper Cummins the first wicket of Pathum Nissanka, that turned things around. The fall of the Kusal Perera to Cummins meant both the half-centurions gone and the slide began soon.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa had Warner repeating the earlier catch in the deep to account for stand-in skipper Kusal Mendis and added three more wickets to return with figures of 4/47. Australia bundled out Sri Lanka for 209.

Chasing a moderate target of 210, Australia got off to a bad start, losing gritty Warner and Steve Smith early to pacer Madhushanka, reeling at 24/2.  It was left to Mitchell Marsh (52), Marnus Labuschagne (40) and Josh Inglis (58) to help Australia avoid any more difficulties. All-rounders Glen Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis chased down the remainder of the target in quick time win by five wickets, with 14 overs to spare.

Australia will next face Pakistan in an all-important encounter on October 20th in Bengaluru.

India maintain their World Cup record with Pakistan!

Bowlers and Rohit Sharma star in thrashing arch rivals for the 8th time

October 14, 2023: After the FIFA World Cup, this encounter is supposed to be the most viewed sporting spectacle on Television. It is one encounter where the fans want a tug-of-war fight between both teams. Did the encounter on 14th October live up to expectations? The answer is a vehement no.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are known to be explosive, but Shaheen Afridi and his in-swingers at the start of the innings will always be at the back of their mind. After all, they have been prey to such good-lengths in the past. Today, however, was different. The first run scored off a nice tuck to the square leg for a boundary, and what followed, was a marvelling stroke play by Rohit Sharma. Indian fans are always angry with Rohit Sharma and troll him as a No-Hit, Minnow basher and so on. I could decipher the root cause of this frustration – We want the artist to play longer, play those languid drives, nonchalant pulls, those reckless sweep shots and the furious Square Cuts. We enjoy them and feel it is our right not to be deprived.

Rohit Sharma, these days, is somehow serving them on a life-size platter. The frustration of him not making the remaining 14 runs to count for yet another century was much higher than the 86 he made to floor the opposition bowling. Gill and Kohli looked good for as long as they were playing, but it is natural to get carried away when the guy on the other side is timing the ball to perfection. Shaheen Afridi got his consolation when Rohit miscued a slower delivery to get dismissed 36 runs short of a victory for India. India scored these 36 runs in 8 odd overs, at a touch less than five runs an over. Shreyas Iyer scored a well-deserved half-century with some clean hitting, but all this looked lacklustre in the light of a Rohit Sharma show.

Earlier in the day, at one of the world’s largest venues filled with blue jerseys, Pakistan looked like a team in balance at one stage with 150+ runs for three wickets. The expectation of a high-scoring encounter peaked at that stage, with Indian fans also wanting a Babar Azam and Rizwan doing well to pose a daunting target for India. What happened next, was aptly described by Nasser Hussain, "A collapse that only Pakistan can conjure upon themselves". Losing the remaining seven wickets for 36 runs left cricket fans speechless.

Rizwan and Babar were playing a knock that was building itself into a strong partnership, which eventually might lead to a mammoth target. In typical calculation, the final score is double 30-over mark score, unless the lower middle order and tail are playing. 156 for 3 with Rizwan still playing well, it was a 300+ confirmed score, and if they go berserk, it was a near target of 350.

Siraj and Bumrah came back to attack and started weaving a web of outstanding fast bowling supported well by Kuldeep and Hardik. What followed was a catastrophe with clinical precision. The Green Brigade looked like Art majors trying to understand Integral Calculus. The ball was nipping back, reversing and importantly, hitting the top of the off stump. In anticipation of a respectable score, the tail wagged aimlessly, only for the innings to fold at 191.

So it has become a record of epic proportions for India to safeguard and Pakistan to break. If Pakistan wants to nurture any hope of making it to the semi-final, they have to be consistent in Bowling, Batting, Fielding, Team Selection and other departments that affect their performance on the field

rather than be worried about the Visas to Pakistani journalists and fans, or not playing Dil Dil Pakistan in the ground.

India, on the other hand, just have to continue the good work, and strictly bring back Ashwin in place of Shardul, irrespective of the pitch conditions.

A must-win for both teams to get their WC campaign on track

Two former champions in the dumps – Australia and Sri Lanka meet in Ekana Stadium, Lucknow

October 16, 2023: We are not yet anywhere near the business end of the World Cup, but a few teams are already in the territory of "no further losses" and who would have thought one of them would be Australia.

Champion team, batters who are super consistent, bowlers who are fast and accurate, a group of more than useful all-rounders, yet it is surprising that Australia haven't crossed 200 in their previous two matches, and is currently placed at the last position in the points table. Well, you can't start a big tournament like World Cup, with one of your gun player in the 15 member squad nursing an injury and back home at the beginning of the tournament, when all teams strive to get off the start line with a bang!!

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, despite scoring back-to-back 300s, backed by Kusal Mendis blinders at the top order, are yet to register a win, thanks to their mystery yet inconsistent bowling attack. Problems seem to have only further confounded, with Shanaka ruled out of the WC, and more than his batting/bowling, SL will miss his astute yet calming influence as a captain. Wellalage could be handful given the struggles the Australian middle order has had with left arm spin.

Australia might not have it easy tomorrow but expect them to register a comfortable victory. If the same pitch is used in Lucknow, expect some more turn and Sri Lanka might feel home and give Australians a run for their money!!

Key Battles:

Starc vs Kusal Mendis
Theekshana vs Warner

Afghanistan shock defending champions England

Spinners take 8 wickets against listless English batters

October 16, 2023: Following a flurry of one-sided games in the tournament, Afghanistan beat world champions England by 69 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

It was England’s second defeat in the first three matches after the drubbing in the World Cup opener against New Zealand. Afghanistan, who had also suffered two defeats against Bangladesh and India earlier, opened its account in the points table with spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi leading the charge.

English captain Jos Butler won the toss and elected to field on a warm afternoon at Delhi. Afghanistan openers made full use of the ground’s relatively shorter dimensions, beautiful batting conditions, fast outfield and ordinary bowling to put on an impressive 114 for the first wicket. The opening stand came in real quick time with Afghanistan going at 7 runs per over and looked well set to score more than 325.

The lack of experience of Afghanistan batters was on display when they stumbled to 190/6 with English bowlers making a comeback and some inspired fielding. It was the rear-guard action and unconventional hitting from Afghanistan's lower order including Rashid Khan and Mujeeb which took them to a respectable total of 284.

Although the track looked fairly good for batting, the spirited Afghanistan team was not going to make it easy for the under-pressure English batting lineup. Having seen their spinners Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone and Joe Root taking wickets and causing problems in the afternoon, the English batters were surprisingly cautious to start with. The procession started with Farooqi trapping Bairstow LBW early, Joe Root losing his stumps to Mujeeb’s guile on 11 and well-set Malan giving a simple catch to Ibrahim Zadran, to leave England struggling at 68-3 in 12 overs. There was no letup in pressure from there on and Afghanistan spinners combined to take 8 wickets with only one English batter Harry Brook posting some challenge. It was a complete performance from Afghanistan, and they dominated England in all three departments, batting, bowling and fielding.

For England, this defeat will hurt and will look to crisis man Ben Stokes once again to revive their fortunes, with the star allrounder expected to be back for an important game against South Africa in six days.

The Black Caps breeze through to an easy win

Match 11: New Zealand vs Bangladesh at Chennai - Review

October 13, 2023: In a match where surprises were least expected, the result was as expected. New Zealand dominated Bangladesh in all departments and went on to win by 8 wickets with a little over 7 overs to spare.

Kane Williamson and Daryll Mitchell carried the innings supported by Devon Conway on the way to conquer a sub-par score of 246. Just like Rahul and Sachin, Rachin also had a rare failure in his batting swansong today. Williamson getting retired hurt will make the Kiwis anxious. He brings calmth and assurance into the batting as long as he is there at the crease.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh was rattled by the sheer pace of Lockie Fergusson losing 4 wickets in the first 15 overs however two guys who have been holding the fort for Bangladesh for a long time now came to their rescue. One of the world’s finest all – rounder Shakib Al Hasan in partnership with old guard Mushfiqur Rahim added 99 runs to the partnership to resurrect the Bangladesh Innings. It is unfortunate that a player like Mahmudullah has to come 7 down to bat given his ability to put his head down and make an impact.

Though they were well on course to make a 260+ score, with the tail coming in aggression was not an option for Bangladesh and were definitely 30 runs short of a comfortable target to defend.

Trent Boult becomes the 3rd fastest to 200 ODI wickets and looks in good space to continue doing what he does best – pick up wickets at the start and end of an innings. Glenn Phillips probably would become the first pure play bowling wicket keeper looking at the way he is chipping away wickets rolling his arm. This is giving them multiple bowling options.

Bangladesh is a front runner for the “Giant Slayer” tag. Ask the Aussies, Pakistan and India about how they can surprise a team. Having said this, I think it is high time they should perform themselves out of the minnow’s tag.

New Zealand are at the pole position with three wins in three games they played, but they will have to play the ranked nations. The fight for the table top intensifies from the second week.

In one sentence – the game gave what was expected and lacked the explosive punch from a world class team.

The 8th Mauka-Mauka Battle of the ICC World Cups is here!

Scales tilted in India's favour to make it 8-0 | Mercurial Pakistan are no pushovers

World Cup Match 12: India vs Pakistan at Ahmedabad - Review

October 13, 2023: Both the teams in question are coming from a remarkable performance. It is the Mother of all the cricketing battles at India’s largest venue - the Narendra Modi Stadium at Ahmedabad. India faces Pakistan in an epic clash that will make or break a long-standing record.

One crushed the opponent, and the other played the grind game.

The last time these two met, in the Asia Cup, India was the run-away winner, but they have a record to safeguard, this time around. In all the ICC World Cups in this format where India and Pakistan have met, Pakistan have never defeated India.

Pakistan will take a lot of solace in their batting department, with Rizwan coming to the party in the game against Sri Lanka. However, their talisman batsman Babar Azam has failed to fire – this is a cause of concern for them.

India on the other hand, has Virat in sublime form and Rohit in an aggressive mood, both ably supported by Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul. But, Shaheen Afridi has decoded the Indian top order and let us not forget the debacle he conjured upon us in the T20 world Cup.

Would Shubman Gill play tomorrow or not will be a million-dollar question for India. Abdullah Shafique, however has more or less cemented his place in the Pakistan batting lineup with a show of classy batting. The form guide would hint at Hasan Ali to be replaced, but would Pakistan like to fix something that's not broken, for such a huge clash is to be seen?

Shaheen Afridi is a result-dependent bowler, and if the Indian top order does not give him wickets, he tends to lose steam quickly. Given the conditions, he is the leader of the pack, but is hardly getting support from others in the bowling department. While on the other hand India might want to consider bringing in Mohammad Shami for this encounter in place of Shardul Thakur.

Both the teams have problems to solve, and India has good problems to solve, which is why we are tilted towards believing it is India’s game to win. The surface is new and is going to be a belter however, batting becomes much easier under the lights so bowling first is a very good option.

Pure Cricket Advise: Bowl first and restrict to under 250!

New Zealand look to make it three in a row

Williamson’s return and batters form big boost for Kiwis

October 12, 2023: New Zealand take on Bangladesh in another day-night encounter at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The black caps start as firm favourites having beaten Bangla Tigers in all five previous meetings in the ODI World Cups and familiarity with the venue due to IPL experience. The return of inspirational leader Kane Williamson following a seven-month long injury layoff will strengthen the team further, which currently stands at no. 2 in the points table. Bangladesh will hope for their slow bowlers to deliver in spin-friendly conditions at Chennai, which saw Indian spinners bamboozle Australia on Sunday.

Both the teams have been involved in one-sided contests against defending champions England with contrasting fortunes. While New Zealand comfortably knocked over England in the opening match, Bangladesh suffered a big 137-run loss at Dharamshala.

Key players to watch out for New Zealand will be Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Both have been in sensational form in recent times and are amongst the leading scorers in this world cup. Ravindra’s spin bowling along with Mitchell Santner’s bowling form will present a challenge to opposing team batters.

The experience of playing for Chennai Super Kings will be handy for number of Kiwi players including Conway and Santner. Kane’s return also means Mark Chapman may have to sit out of this encounter. For Bangladesh, quality allrounders Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan will look to exploit spin-friendly dry conditions at Chepauk. They also have quality pacers in their ranks who can move the ball and reverse swing with the old ball. Litton Das has been in sublime form and will look for support and more intent from middle-order batters in the side.

Bangladesh do have the ability to surprise major oppositions, but it will be a formidable challenge to beat New Zealand who will be keen to maintain their unbeaten run in this tournament.

South Africa defeat five-time champions comprehensively to top the table

Match 10 Review: Australia vs South Africa

October 12, 2023: Australia, the winners of the Men’s ICC Cricket World Cup in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015, would not have dropped as many catches in their five World Cup triumphs as they dropped in one day against a marauding South Africans.

Contrasting fortunes for the two teams in the past editions, contrasting in the ICC World Cup 2023 - It’s two in two for South Africa – big wins both. It’s two in two for Australia humiliating defeats both. It’s two centuries in two matches for Quinton de Kock.

The Ekana pitch in Lucknow is touted as one of the most difficult ones to bat on. Australia’s approach was in stark contrast to the Proteas’, while the former was clueless, the latter rode on some well-paced innings from its batters.

Chasing a target of 312 for a win, the Aussies lost wickets early and at regular intervals with Marnus Labuschagne’s scratchy 46 being the top score and the team eventually folded up for 177, handing SA a 134 run win. At one stage, Australia was staring at their lowest World Cup total, reeling at 70 for 6, with Kagiso Rabada on fire scalping Steve Smith, Josh Inglis and Marcos Stoinis.

Earlier, put into bat South Africa amassed 311/7 peppered with a handy dose of dropped catches by the butter finger Aussies. Opener Quinton de Kock, with a second successive century, left many wondering why would he want to retire from ODIs at just 30? While Aiden Markram smashed a quickfire fifty, to follow his century in the match against Sri Lanka. QDK was at ease at his IPL home ground pacing the innings from sedate to accelerating.

The Australian fielding cut a sorry figure dropping 5 catches including twice of skipper Temba Bavuma, and Markram on 1. The bowling changes by Pat Cummins were baffling, to say the least, with the constant shuffling unable to break partnerships.

So where does that leave Australia and the contenders for the knockouts?

Sample this post and the accompanying stat:

In a tournament just 10 matches old, there were 7 innings of 300+ scores, South Africa getting two in their wins and Sri Lanka two in losses, however here is an interesting stat:

Australia while chasing 300+ totals in ODIs in last one month:

Lost to SA by 134 runs (today)
Lost to India by 99 runs
Lost to SA by 122 runs
Lost to SA by 164 runs
Lost to SA by 111 runs

Their last successful 300+ chase came way back in Sep, 2020. It's still a long tournament with 7 games left, but will the champion side wake up.

Batting heavyweight India overpower spirited Afghanistan

Match 9: India vs Afghanistan - Review

October 11, 2023: Edge of the Seat Entertainment – the phrase can simply be replaced with one name – Rohit Sharma. There is a sense of excitement and fear when he is batting. He has a cruel play with the bowlers, which at times, he wins, at times he loses. He does not shut the door like Steven Smith or Virat Kohli instead he keeps the door ajar, and plays that little game of catch me if you can with the bowlers.

The DDCA Arun Jaitley Stadium turned up to see the son of the Soil Jersey Number 18 today, but Jersey number 45, made sure it was his day. Rohit Gurunadh Sharma today showed that when the opportunity against minnows arrives, to keep the Net Run Rate out of the equation, one should pulverize the bowling attack.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan left the demons of the previous innings beside them and started their innings with assured composure. Chasing a hugely not enough tricky target of 271, Rohit Sharma looked in a hurry. The ball flew in all directions with a touch of class. Such was his domination of the bowling, that by the time India reached 100 in the 11th over, Ishan Kishan was at 14. And when he fell at 131, India was in a near-impossible to lose position. Virat Kohli joined Rohit Sharma with a masterful 55. With 28 Boundaries and 8 maximums, Indians made short work of the target, reaching it in 35 overs and 8 wickets in hand.

Earlier in the day, Skipper Hashmatullah and Azmat Omarzai stitched a potent partnership, which at one point, threatened to breach the 300 mark easily. Hashmatullah and Azmat played with extreme maturity and attacking rigour. Indian bowlers were not short of ideas, but such was the batting display of the two batters, that they motored along smoothly.

Bumrah had his day at the office well organized as he did what he does best, taking four wickets with an economy rate touch below 4. For some inexplicable reason, Shardul Thakur was picked ahead of Ashwin. Shardul is past his pay-by date and is quickly becoming a spent force, but for his most innocuous deliveries that keep getting him wickets. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep pegged the score back with disciplined bowling.

The fall of Azmat slowed down the scoring a bit, but the arrival of Rashid Khan gave the momentum required by taking the attack to Siraj in particular. The tail wagged and wagged well to improve the predicted score by 15 runs more. However, Afghanistan was 30 runs short of a comfortable score.

Afghanistan batted well but inexperience lower down the order and inability to pace the innings hurt them the most. It takes a lot of courage to stand up and work around your weaknesses. Afghanistan is currently doing the best it can, and they are winning hearts and making friends among the fraternity.

Australia looks to open account against old rivals South Africa

The slow pitch and red-hot form of Proteas batters make them slight favourites

Match 10: Australia vs South Africa - Review

October 11, 2023: After nine matches played in this World Cup, almost all have been one-sided, barring the encounter between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tenth match of this edition between the two big teams Australia and South Africa, is expected to be a close encounter, with South Africa holding a slight upper hand on current form. It will be a battle between South Africa’s rejuvenated batting line-up against Australia’s superior pace bowling attack, arguably the best in the world.

The two teams with contrasting starts to their World Cup campaigns will come head to head at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on a brand new pitch. While Australia’s batting struggled against India’s spin trio at Chennai, South African batters Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram scored centuries in the comfortable 102-run victory against Sri Lanka. South Africa put up the highest score of the current World Cup in its first match. At the same time, Australians could not even touch the 200-run mark in its first match.

Although these are early stages, and despite the current South African team’s impressive start in the league stage of the tournament, it will be interesting to see if they can continue the momentum till the business end, where they have usually failed to deliver and let down their fans. Nonetheless, they can draw solace from an impressive record against Australia – having won 15 of their last 20 completed ODIs against Australia (not to forget from behind 3-2 victory in the recently held ODI series in South Africa).

A key player to watch out for Australia will be Glen Maxwell, who missed out on the last ODI series played between the two teams last month. With his explosive batting and more than handy off-spin, he can be an X factor for Australia, seeking to arrest the recent slide in form. Marcus Stoinis, who sat out of the warmup games and the first match against India, has recovered from his hamstring niggle and could replace Cameron Green. For South Africa, inform batters like Klassen and de Kock are likely to lead the charge, and the team could add another spinner to accompany Keshav Maharaj to exploit Australia’s weakness against spin.

The unknown factor of the newly re-laid pitch, large outfield, Australia’s impeccable record in the World Cups, despite contrasting forms of the two teams, should make for a nail-biting finish, and that is exactly what this World Cup needs.

Indian Batting Juggernaut faces the Afghan bowling magic

India vs Afghanistan - Match 9 - Preview

October 11, 2023At the capital city, 2 teams which are on the either side of the ODI ranking spectrum face off in their 2nd game of this campaign. Coming back from a below par performance, Afghanistan would love to give a scare if not upset the hosts in what could be a test of Batting excellence against mystery bowling.

We should not strike out the possibility of a Afghan Batting onslaught as we have seen in the past that guys like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hasmatullah Shahidi can go berserk with their hard hitting. Rashid Khan, Nabi and Mujeeb are familiar with the conditions but the lack of big match experience might hurt them in their plans.

At Kotla, it is always a good idea to put the opponent to bat first. Again under the lights, with the onset of winter bowlers might not have too much of help, but given the high scoring encounters which other teams are playing, India might be tempted to bat first and give a huge boost to their net run rate which might eventually come into play.

For Afghanistan, they have nothing to lose. They can just go and enjoy their game against familiar faces. If they spring a surprise, that will be great to the world of cricket and specially this world cup.

Rohit Sharma would want to make most of this opportunity to come back to groove and Ishan Kishan in the absence of Shubman Gill would love to cement his opening slot. The Indian bowling variety might be a bit heavy for Afghanistan but if they get the right length, they can hit big sixes.

Delhi has favoured the team batting first to win 5 out of the last 6 ODIs. However, India would fancy chasing too!

Brilliant batting and wayward bowling highlights Pakistan's record World cup chase

Four Hundreds – two by each team – 1 winner Pakistan vs Sri Lanka – Match 8 Review.

October 10, 2023: Pakistan recorded the highest ever successful chase in ICC men’s World cup, overhauling Sri Lanka’s mammoth 344 in the 49th over. Riding on centuries by opener Abdullah Shafique and a cramping Muhammed Rizwan’s brilliant 130 not out, Pakistan made Lankan bowling look pedestrian. The two centurians made batting look easy after Pakistan was reeling at 37 for two at the fall of skipper Babar Azam’s wicket. Player of the match Rizwan, fighting leg cramps post his 100, added 176 runs for the third wicket with Shafique and 95 for the fourth with Saud Shakeel.

The Sri Lankan bowling was wayward at most times with almost all bowlers spraying the ball without control. Pathirana in particular was clueless in the face of the onslaught by the Pak batters. Spinner Wellalage needs more experience to handle the kind of carnage they were treated to, wicket taking balls were hardly happening.

Earlier, electing to bat Sri Lanka put up their second consecutive 300+ score in the tournament. Kusal Mendis, who put the South African bowling to sword, continued from where he left off scoring a stupendous hundred in just 65 balls, along with other centurian Sadeera Samarawickrama and opener Pathum Nissanka’s half century, posted the imposing total. However, the later batsmen fell short of putting up a possible 360+ total and ended up with 344/9.

Pure Cricket take:

Worries for Pakistan ahead of their big-ticket encounter against India on Saturday: Imam ul Haq and Babar Azam’s batting form. The bowling - Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Nawaz and Hasan Ali having no control and giving away too many runs, Shadab Khan's spin can be fodder for the Indian batters.

Sri Lanka’s batters may have to do much better than putting up 300+ if they have to have any chance of winning in the forthcoming matches, considering their bowlers went for almost 775 runs in the two matches so far.

Malan and Topley star in England's 137 run win over Bangladesh

Match 7: England vs Bangladesh - Review

October 10, 2023: Defending champions England put their first match huge loss behind them to beat Bangladesh and brought back the Net Run Rate into positive at Dharamshala.

Left arm seamer Reece Topley playing in place of Moeen Ali picked up 4 wickets for 43 and ensured that Bangladesh didn't pose much of a challenge to the imposing English score. Barring opener Litton Das and veteran wicket keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored half centuries, Bangladesh batsmen failed to match up to the English attack and folded for 227 and losing by 137 runs.

Put into bat, England's top order went hammer and tongs at the Bangla bowling with Dawid Malan scoring 140 in 107 balls and was involved in two century-plus partnerships with half centurions opener Jonny Bairstow (52) and Joe Root (82). England looked set for a score of 400, but eventually finished with score of 364-9, with some later order flurry of wickets. Right arm offbreak bowler Mahedi Hasan was the pick of the Bangla bowlers with 4 wickets and Shoriful Islam picking 3.

Bangladesh, after their two matches in cool Dharamsala travel to the hot and humid Chennai for their next match against table-toppers New Zealand on Friday Oct 13th, while England play Afghanistan in Delhi on Sunday Oct 15th.
